Week Seven Recap (6-1): Come back swinging - the story of AWESOME!

ATLANTIC CITY SHARKS   431
TEAM HABS                           294

Lineup Moves;  No major moves YET.  Played the waiver wire for off day starters fairly well at a +25, but lineup still only posted 188 total points.  Strongly considering just playing week to week waivers for middle infeild slots.  Attempting trades, ect.

Some names to consider:

Brandon Crawford has streaks where he hits like Troy Tulowitski for four or five weeks and he's got that look right now.

Tori Hunter.  Hunter's hitting like its 2005.  Looks like a comeback of the year candidate.

Carlos Correa.  He's gonna make the league look stupid when he gets there. Currently OPSing at 1.185 in AA after 1.007 last year in high A.  Oh, did I tell you.  And he plays shortstop.  On top of that OPS steal you 25 bases a year.

Pitching Moves:  Kyle Hendricks posted a complete game shutout worth 49 points.

Conclusions:  The pitching staff was excellent again posting 243 points and weathering waiver wire blowups of -27 and -14.  Overall the staff went 6-4 with 10 saves.  The lineup is becoming a bit off a concern.  I don't have a legitimate power threat.

First Blush: Maikel Franco is just a hell of a fun name to say (Michael Fronk-oh) and oh by the way, he also looks really small on TV.

THe Phillies finally called up uber-prospect Maikel Franco and wow!, this kid takes some seriously violent looking swings.  Looks almost painful when he misses, but when he connects it's about a pretty a right handed swing as you'll see.

Passes the eye test in the field too.  Got a weird sidearm sling thing throwing the ball to first, but the ball gets there in plenty of time.  Seems to have quick feet as well.

Franco was tearing up triple AAA to the tune of .355/.384/.539, though that seems less important to his promotion than the date.  May 15th.  The Phils get another year of team control and while as a fan, after watching Franco start to mash in spring training, you definitely wanted to see Franco in the show on opening day, it made sense for the Phillies, in this a "rebuilding" year, to wait.

What do the experts say about this kid?  Well, the numbers guys are a little sketchy.  Franco doesn't have a history of walking a whole lot (his .OBP typcially only 15 to 10 points higher than his average) and his comps lump him in with some big time busts like Josh Vitters and Blake DeWitt.  However, the scouts like both the bat and the glove, with one scout going so far as to compare Franco to a young Nolan Arenado.

So perhaps you're wondering if you should tune in and watch this kid. The answer is yes.  He may not hit 40 home runs, but he's 23 and has the quickest bat we've seen playing the hot corner since.  Well, since Scott Rolen, really.  Franco doesn't look anything like Rolen, don't get all weird and paranoid.  But, yes, finally, yes.  A reason to tune in and watch the game.

Week Six Recap (5-1): Baseball's a little bitch sometimes. How to deal with it and other tender tips.

VERACRUZ POSSE              432
ATLANTIC CITY SHARKS  279

Obviously, got spanked this week.  Mediocre output from lineup (again) at 176 despite influx of off-day waiver wire starters.  Pitching was awful, awful, awful.  103 total points.  Waiver wire blowups of -26, -15, -14, -4, -4, and -4, plus the bullpen got rocked, Yimi Garcia at -25, Fernando Rodney at -6, and to top it off King Felix posted  a -1.

There's nothing to learn here other than, in baseball (as in life), what goes up, must come down.

You can't win 'em all and other such cliched platitudes.

The thing to do here is not freak out.

Turn the page, homie.

5 and 1.

There's nothing to see here.

Week Five Recap (5-0): Victory through waiver wire pickups? What!?!

ATLANTIC CITY SHARKS 408
NEW YORK METROPOLITANS 354

Lineup Moves: No major moves, only off day fill ins with mostly off results.  Kevin Pillar was the only player to post positive points +4, however, the net result of this weeks roster tweaks was an uninspiring -2.  Kenley Jansen back from the DL (FINALLY!)

Homerun Pickups:  Nathan Karns, Jason Hammel, Matt Garza and Jonathon Niese all posted starts of 20+

Conclusion:  The lineup was bad again with only 163 points and is beginning to become a concern. Played the waiver wire on off days to bulk up but with mixed results.  Of the regulars, Castro, Gattis and Davis all stunk up the joint and while Mookie Betts posted 31, none of the other starters came close to twenty.

The pitching staff carried the team again at 245 points.  My waiver wire picks were a little boom (24, 25, 26, 22) or bust (-16,-16,-9) but King Felix was dominant in two starts again and the bullpen was almost flawless for an overall line of  9-5 with 10 saves.

The pitching staff with the full complement of closers looks like this.

SP Felix Hernandez

RP Kenley Jansen
RP Trevor Rosenthal
RP Joakim Soria
RP Jason Grilli
RP Fernando Rodney
RP Jeurys Familia
RP John Axeford

Week Four Recap (4-0): Regression and Progression, Gattis saves the day

ATLANTIC CITY SHARKS  364
TEAM MARGOT  348

Lineup Moves:  Dropped freakin' Adam La Freakin Roche and Bilbo Butler.  Added Kendry Morales and shifted him to 1B and Chris Davis at 1B/3B.  Dropped Angel Pagan and Steve Pearce, Holt and Guerrero.  Added Dexter Fowler, Josh Reddick, Evan Gattis and Starling Marte (who was inexplicably just floating around on waivers).

THe lineup now looks like this:

C Buster Posey
1B Kendry Morales
2B Robbie Cano
3B Kyle Seager
SS Starlin Castro
2B/SS Xander Boegarts
1B/3B Chris Davis
OF Starling Marte
OF Dexter Fowler
OF Mookie Betts
OF Will Myers
OF Josh Reddick
DH Evan Gattis

Pitching Pickups:  Miguel Gonzalez, 29 and Seattle's T-Wan Walker 24.

Conclusion:  The lineup was as good as has been all year at 185, but still 15 points under the roster design thresh hold.  The sweeping changes have worked, but the middle infield still looks suspect as Cano is off to a slow start (not really worried) and Castro and Boegarts are playing out of their minds right now and still only putting up 12 to 15 points a week.  King Felix had another good start and the bullpen was dominant again, but my waiver wire picks were mostly sad and or sadder (thank-you Drew Hutchinson).  Pitching staff went a mediocre 3-6 with 10 saves and 179 points.

Just got lucky this week.  Opponent inexplicably didn't play AJ Pierzynski (left the slot open, actually) on Monday and AJ popped for 11 points.  I picked up Gattis for Sunday's game and he blew up for 15 points.  That's a 26 point swing in a 16 point game.

Hmm?
